Paying and tipping at restaurants in Japan

Where to pay, whether to tip, and how to handle cash trays and split bills.

Reviewed General guidance — local signs come first

You do not need flawless technique. Notice the people around you, follow venue guidance, and use these customs as a helpful starting point.

01

The register is often the finish line

Many restaurants place a bill folder or slip on your table and expect you to pay at a register near the exit. Other venues bring a card terminal to the table. Follow the bill and signage.

02

Skip the tip

Service is included at most ordinary restaurants, and cash left behind may be treated as forgotten money. Some higher-end venues add a stated service charge; this is not an invitation to add another tip.

03

Ask about splitting before paying

Separate checks are not always possible, especially at busy times. One person paying and settling privately afterward is often simplest. Accepted payment methods vary, so keep a backup.
