Shinkansen luggage rules, explained simply
Where bags go, when oversized luggage needs a reservation, and how to board smoothly.
You do not need flawless technique. Notice the people around you, follow venue guidance, and use these customs as a helpful starting point.
Measure before the station
On certain routes, luggage whose total dimensions exceed the operator’s threshold requires a seat with an oversized baggage area. Policies differ by route and can change, so confirm with the rail operator when booking.
Use the space attached to your seat
Normal suitcases often fit on the overhead rack or at your feet if they do not intrude on another passenger. The space behind the last row is not automatically public storage; it may be linked to reserved seats.
Board in the right place
Your ticket shows the train, car, and seat. Platform signs show where each car stops. Being at the correct marker before arrival keeps the short boarding window easy.
