Onsen rules: your first Japanese hot spring, step by step

The complete flow from changing room to bath, including washing, towels, hair, and tattoos.

Reviewed General guidance — local signs come first

You do not need flawless technique. Notice the people around you, follow venue guidance, and use these customs as a helpful starting point.

01

Before the bathing area

Remove all clothing in the changing room and store it with your large towel. Bring only the small washing towel and any toiletries allowed. Baths are usually separated by gender, though arrangements and policies vary.

02

Wash first, soak second

Sit at a shower station, wash and rinse your body completely, then tidy the station. Enter the bath slowly without splashing. The shared bath is for soaking, not washing or swimming.

03

Keep the water shared

Tie up long hair and keep it out of the water. Place the small towel on your head or beside the bath, never in it. Speak softly and give other bathers space.

04

Check tattoo access, do not guess

Policies range from full acceptance to cover stickers, private baths, or no entry. Rules can change and size limits differ. Contact the actual facility before arriving.
